In the past few weeks, non-fungible tokens have gained mainstream adoption among gaming platforms in the wake of the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar. However, not all gaming platforms are impressed with digital collectibles. Rockstar Games is an example, which has decided to ban them.
Rockstar Games Banning NFTs
In a November 20 blog post, the American video game publisher Rockstar Games banned the usage of digital assets, including NFTs and cryptocurrencies, in its online Grand Theft Auto V servers.
Rockstar Games is a gaming platform allowing gamers to operate “role-playing servers” for Grand Theft Auto V. The platform allows fans to modify their PC game and take the role of non-playable avatars in the virtual world to interact.
Before the imposed ban, some servers had adopted non-fungible tokens and crypto capabilities to provide ownership of the in-game assets or offer exclusive benefits to regular game players.
The Grand Theft Auto V server is a perfect example, offering special cars and weapons represented as NFTs assets. Among the crypto ban victims is popular rapper “Lil Durk,” who recently launched his GTA role-playing server with NFTs.
Victims Of Rockstar Games’ NFT Ban
In a recent tweet, Lil Durk announced that he would take down his server after receiving threats from the legal counsel of Rockstar’s parent company, Take-Two Interactive. In a short statement, Durk remarked:
“We have no choice but to comply with their demands, as we intend to do right by Take-Two and Rockstar. We will be working with them to find an amicable solution to this matter.”

Other gaming servers impacted by the imposed NFT ban include the Brazilian gaming organization Loud and its Web3-centric parent company, Spacecaps. The firm’s Snackclub division operates a GTA server called Cidade Alta, which uses NFTs for exclusive items.
Meanwhile, Rockstar Games seems to be following the footprints of Minecraft, which imposed a similar ban in July. At the time, Microsoft and developer Mojang imposed NFTs and crypto tokens ban from all fan-operated Minecraft servers. It also prohibited Web3 derivative projects that use Minecraft assets.
